On Saturday I was on a uni field trip to Ladies’ Spring Wood to undertake a habitat survey. A good day was had, with a couple of birding highlights including mandarin, grey wagtail and dipper on the River Sheaf, a nesting stock dove by the deer park, and singing blackcap and chiffchaff singing at the former Beauchief Nurseries and Gulley’s Wood Meadow.
There were also a good few butterflies around, including speckled wood, orange tip, green-veined white and large white.
A few pics…
Today I had a walk on patch with very few highlights. The grey heron below was stood by a pond on Low Matlock Lane where a plastic heron has previously been stood, so I did something of a double take when it actually moved… Elsewhere there was a couple of jays and blackcaps south of the river, a kestrel, the usual singing willow warblers and chiffchaffs, and a few swallows and house martins by Old Wheel Dam.
But no swifts yet! Surely any day now!
