Patch Update 03/01/09

My first proper patch visit of the year, with a full circuit done and no hangover! Highlights included a bit of a surprise, with a cormorant flying fairly low over the Hepworth site. Elsewhere there were c.70 redwing and c.10 fieldfare on Rowell Lane (with another 2 redwing and 1 fieldfare opposite Loxley Nurseries), 6 tufted duck on Old Wheel Dam with 66 Canada geese in the fields, 3 treecreepers near Olive Dam, great spotted woodpeckers on Rowell Lane and Low Matlock Lane, 2 jays not far from the house, and bullfinches by the cemetery and at the top of Stacey Lane.

I love this time of year, as it’s easy to get year ticks! Eight today – treecreeper, bullfinch, great spotted woodpecker, tufted duck, jay, redwing, cormorant and chaffinch.
